Buying Guide & Pre-Sales Questions

Does the box start automatically when powered on?
Yes, the "auto-start" function is integrated and activated. As soon as the box receives power, it boots up without the need to press the power button. Ideal for use with switchable power outlets.
Is the Google Play Store installed?
Yes, the official Google Play Store is pre-installed, giving you access to thousands of apps. Please note that occasionally some apps (e.g. purely touch-based applications) may not be compatible. However, thanks to the open Android 14 system, you can also install apps manually as .apk files (sideloading).
Can the navigation and status bar be displayed?
Yes, this is possible. You can permanently show or hide the bottom navigation bar and the top notification bar as desired.
What does "Root switch" mean?
This feature is aimed at experts. You can simply enable or disable root access via a switch in the settings. This is often necessary for special system apps, firewalls, or deep system modifications.
Is the storage expandable?
Yes, the storage can be expanded via the integrated microSD card slot (tested up to 128GB, possibly more) or via the USB ports with external hard drives/USB sticks.
Is a Google account strictly necessary?
No. Unlike certified systems (like Google TV), the S89L can be set up and used entirely without a Google account (e.g. for local media or sideloading). Logging in is only required if you want to download apps directly from the official Google Play Store.
Is a 4K resolution also available in apps and the web browser?
Currently, native 4K output is specifically designed for video playback (e.g., in media players or YouTube). For performance reasons and better usability (scaling of text and icons), the general user interface (menus), web browsers, and standard apps are rendered in 1080p (Full HD) and upscaled by your TV. This ensures smooth everyday performance, while you still enjoy full 4K sharpness during video playback.

Troubleshooting & Knowledge Base

Help with settings and technical problems. Solutions directly from our technicians.

The S89L turns on or off by itself. How can I prevent this?
This behavior is caused by "HDMI-CEC" (Consumer Electronics Control). If this function is active, your TV sends a signal to the S89L to do the same when turning on or off (and vice versa).
The solution:
  1. In the menu, go to Settings Inputs & Devices HDMI CEC.
  2. Disable the options for automatic power on and off (e.g. "Auto power on" / "Auto power off") or turn off the CEC switch completely if you want to control the devices strictly separately.
The picture stutters during movies (Judder / double contours). What can I do?
Movies usually run at 24p (24 frames per second). If the S89L is fixed at 60Hz in the settings, the TV has to display frames twice, which leads to unsightly "skipping" during camera pans.
Activate automatic matching:
  1. Go to Settings Display & Sound Automatic frame rate.
  2. Activate the Switch Frame Rate and resolution function there. The system will now automatically switch to the correct refresh rate of the respective movie.
The picture looks overexposed (bright faces) or the background is pixelated.
This is an incompatibility with the HDR signal or the color space. The TV briefly misinterprets the picture data from the TV box.
Solution in the S89L menu:
  1. Go to Settings Display & Sound Advanced display settings.
  2. As a test, set the Color Mode to "RGB" or "YCbCr".
  3. Change the preferred dynamic range from "Match content dynamic range" to "System preferred conversion" (or test "Force conversion").
  4. Restart the device afterwards.
Important note for premium TVs (e.g. Metz, Sony, LG): Make sure to set the HDMI port used on your TV to "Enhanced format" or "UHD color" in your TV's settings.
Can I use this device as a digital signage player?
Yes, absolutely. Thanks to its strong performance, the open Android 14 system, and the built-in auto-start function, the S89L provides an ideal foundation for basic presentation and signage tasks.
Looking for a professional B2B solution?
For specialized, maintenance-free 24/7 applications with advanced hardware features (like Kiosk Mode, native hardware portrait rotation, or automatic video loop playback from a USB stick), we recommend our dedicated Orbsmart DS Player.
Can a specific app start automatically after booting (Auto-start)?
Yes, this is easily possible. With the latest firmware update, the S89L features a built-in native auto-start function directly in the system menu.
You can now simply select your desired app in the settings. The system will then launch this app fully automatically right after booting. The installation of an additional third-party app is no longer necessary!
How do I install and activate another launcher (home screen)?
Since the S89L uses an open Android 14, you can customize the user interface to your liking.
  1. Download your desired launcher (e.g. Nova Launcher, Wolf Launcher) via the Google Play Store.
  2. Then go to Settings Apps Default apps Home app.
  3. Select your newly installed launcher there. From now on, the device will always start with the new interface.
Why doesn't MS Teams or Google Meet recognize my USB microphone?
This is a known software phenomenon with Android systems. Mobile apps like MS Teams are strongly focused on smartphone hardware and often block external USB microphones (e.g. conference speakers) on TV boxes for security reasons.
The solution:
The most proven and stable method for video conferences with USB peripherals on open Android boxes is using Teams or Meet directly via the web browser (e.g. Chrome or Edge in desktop mode). Unlike the app, the browser usually accesses the USB drivers provided by Android completely without problems.
My WiFi connection is extremely slow or drops right after booting. What can I do?
This behavior often occurs when the router broadcasts the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz networks under the exact same name (so-called "Band Steering") and the device constantly switches between the networks. The following steps resolve the problem:
  1. Separate networks (Recommended): Give the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz networks different names (SSIDs) in your router settings. Then connect the device specifically to the faster 5 GHz network.
  2. Adjust WiFi standard (Workaround for 2.4 GHz): If drops still occur in the 2.4 GHz network despite separation, there is often an incompatibility with the router's "802.11 b/g/n mixed mode". In this case, change the WiFi standard in the router for the 2.4 GHz network to "802.11 b/g" (without the n standard).
Note: This ensures a very stable connection but reduces the maximum transmission speed in the 2.4 GHz network. Therefore, using the 5 GHz network is always preferred.
My Bluetooth keyboard or air mouse responds with a heavy delay. What helps?
A very sluggish or double input with Bluetooth is almost always due to physical radio interference. Bluetooth operates on the 2.4 GHz frequency - exactly like many WiFi routers and the radiation from fast USB 3.0 devices.
The solution:
Connect the S89L to your 5 GHz WiFi or via LAN cable if possible. In addition, as a test, remove all USB 3.0 devices (like fast external hard drives or sticks) that are plugged directly into the box, as their frequencies can massively disrupt Bluetooth reception.
Does the S89L support a 4-way split-screen (Quad-View) for multitasking?
No, a stable 4-way split-screen is not supported. The Android 14 operating system is natively designed for a classic split-screen for maximum 2 apps (e.g. one app left, one right). Attempting to open 4 apps simultaneously via developer options (freeform mode) leads to severe performance drops and crashes. The processor and RAM are not designed to render 4 active video streams simultaneously on one screen.
