Important note for streaming users

The R82 is optimized for playing your own local media. It is not a certified streaming player. Apps like Netflix or Disney+ usually only run in SD quality. If your focus is on streaming, we recommend our Google-certified models.

Buying Guide & Pre-Sales Questions

Can I connect a hard drive?
Yes, absolutely. The R82 offers an external SATA port (cable included) for 2.5" or 3.5" hard drives with a capacity of up to 16TB. Additionally, you can connect USB hard drives to the USB 3.0 or USB 2.0 ports.
Are Blu-ray menus supported?
Yes, the R82 supports the playback of UHD and BD ISO files including full menu support. This makes it the ideal replacement for physical players.
Does the player support 3D movies?
Yes, 3D MVC (MKV, ISO) is supported and can be correctly output to a 3D-capable TV or projector.
Can I install Android Apps (APK)?
Yes, thanks to the Android operating system, you can sideload your own apps (APKs). Please note, however, that the device's focus is on local media. The compatibility of third-party apps may vary.
Can I also play movies over my network (NAS)?
Yes. Thanks to the integrated Gigabit LAN port and modern WiFi 6 (AX), you can easily stream high-resolution 4K movies smoothly directly from your NAS server or a PC share (SMB, NFS, UPnP) over the network.

Troubleshooting & Knowledge Base

Help with settings and technical problems. Solutions directly from our technicians.

USB hard drive: Error message "Access denied"
The R82 uses the modern Android 11 operating system. Strict Google security guidelines ("Scoped Storage") apply here, meaning apps are no longer allowed to automatically access external hard drives.
The solution:
  • For playing movies, primarily use the pre-installed "Media Center" app. This has the necessary system permissions out of the box.
  • Third-party apps (e.g. Kodi, VLC): If you want to use other apps, you must grant access manually under: Settings Apps Special app access All files access.
Screen remains black when starting a movie or the device crashes
If you start movies with a very high bitrate and HD audio tracks (like DTS-HD MA or Dolby TrueHD) and the screen remains black or the device freezes, there is a communication error (handshake) in the audio output.
The solution:
Go to the main menu under Settings Audio HDMI Audio. Change the setting from "Auto" to "RAW" (Passthrough) here. If the device has already crashed, restart it and then make the setting.
Picture stuttering on 4K movies with Dolby TrueHD / Atmos
Occasionally, slight picture stuttering can occur with very large 4K files (MKV/ISO) in combination with the Dolby TrueHD / Atmos audio track. This usually happens with extreme bitrate peaks or complex file structures (seamless branching).
The solution:
As a test, switch to an alternative audio track (e.g. standard Dolby Digital 5.1 or DTS) to relieve the data stream. If this does not help, we recommend remuxing the file on the PC using free programs like "MKVToolNix" to clean up the file structure.
The menu or photos look blurry (not native 4K)
This is not a defect. The R82 separates image processing into two areas:
  • Movies: Use a direct hardware path and are guaranteed to be output pixel-perfect in native 4K. (Verifiable via the info button on your TV remote while the movie is playing).
  • Menu & Photos: The Android user interface (and thus the photo display) is hard-coded into the chip architecture to be limited to 1080p (Full HD). Even if you manually force the HDMI output to 4K in the settings, the internally calculated 1080p image is simply upscaled.
A razor-sharp, native 4K image is technically not possible in the menu or photo view. For maximum sharpness with static photos, we therefore recommend plugging USB sticks directly into the TV.
Manually installed apps (APK) are missing from the home screen
Due to the R82's special home cinema user interface, apps that you have installed manually via USB stick (sideloading) or that are not primarily optimized for TV systems are sometimes not displayed directly in the main menu.
The solution:
You can launch the app at any time by navigating to Settings Apps See all apps and opening it from there. Alternatively, you can install a "Shortcut Maker" from the Play Store to force shortcuts onto the home screen.
NAS or network share (SMB) is not found automatically
It often happens that Windows PCs or NAS systems (such as Synology or QNAP) do not appear during the automatic network search in the "Media Center". This is due to the tightened network security guidelines of modern operating systems (e.g. SMBv1 deactivated by default in Windows 10/11).
The solution (Manual addition):
Go to "Network" (SMB) in the Media Center and select the option to add manually. Enter the IP address of your NAS or PC directly there (e.g. 192.168.178.50) as well as your username and password. The R82 will then connect immediately via the newer and secure SMBv2/v3 protocol.
Streaming apps (Netflix, Prime Video, Disney+) are missing or only run in SD
The R82 is a specialized high-end player for local files (hard drive/home cinema). It does not have the DRM certifications of the commercial streaming providers. Therefore, the apps are missing in the Play Store or do not play videos in HD/4K.
Our recommendation: If you are looking for a solution specifically for online streaming in 4K HDR, we recommend the GX1 or GD2. These are officially licensed and optimized for streaming services.
Downloaded apps cannot be controlled
Many apps from the Play Store are actually developed for touchscreens (smartphones) and do not respond to the standard arrow keys on the remote control.
The solution: Press the Mouse button (mouse pointer symbol) on the remote control. A cursor will appear on the screen, which you can control with the arrow keys to simulate "tapping". Alternatively, you can simply connect a standard PC mouse via USB.
TV does not switch to 3D mode / stuttering when starting a movie
In order for your TV to automatically switch to 3D mode with 3D ISOs and for 24p movies to run smoothly (without judder) just like in the cinema, automatic frame switching must be active.
The solution:
Go to Settings Playback Frame Rate Mode and strictly select "Switch frame rate and resolution" here.
AV receiver does not show Dolby Atmos / HD audio for audio files (MKA)
The R82 processes pure music files and video files via different internal engines. The music app often downmixes 3D audio formats to stereo (PCM) because it does not support bitstreaming (passthrough).
The pro tip:
Simply change the file extension of your Atmos audio file on your computer from .mka to .mkv. By doing this, you force the system to use the powerful video engine. This loops the HD audio signal unchanged (bitstream) through to your amplifier.
Why can't the "Poster Wall" find any covers anymore?
This is a known issue caused by a change to the API interface of the movie database (TMDB). The pre-installed app version can therefore no longer retrieve data.
Solution (Manual Update):
  1. Download the updated app here: Poster_RTD1619B_v4.3.52.apk
  2. Copy the file to a USB stick and connect it to the R82.
  3. Open the "Media Center" (file manager) on the R82, select the USB stick and click on the APK file.
  4. Select "Install" or "Update". Restart the app afterwards.
