Common Questions & Buyer's Guide

What is a streaming player and why do I need one?
A streaming player is a compact mini-computer that connects to your TV via HDMI. It upgrades older devices with the latest Smart TV features or replaces the often slow software of newer TVs. With operating systems like Android TV™ or Google TV™, you get access to thousands of apps (Netflix, YouTube, Disney+, media libraries), voice control, and the ability to mirror content from your phone to the TV (Chromecast).
Difference: Android TV vs. Google TV
Technically, both are based on Android. Android TV (e.g., on the G1) offers a classic, app-centric interface. You see your installed apps in rows – very tidy and fast. Google TV (e.g., on the GD2, GX1) is the evolution: The interface is "content-based". You see suggestions for movies and series from all your installed services mixed on the home screen. Ideal for discovering new content.
When is a Box (GD2/G1/GX1) better than a Stick (GD1)?
A stick is perfect if the device should be invisible. However, a box offers decisive advantages for power users:
  • Ports: Boxes have USB ports for hard drives/mouse/keyboard and an optical audio output.
  • Stable Internet: Boxes have a LAN port. Wired internet is often more stable than WiFi, especially for 4K streaming with high data rates.
  • Cooling: Due to the larger housing, heat dissipation is often better, which is advantageous for continuous load (gaming).
What do Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos mean?
Dolby Vision (supported by G1 & GX1) is an HDR format that dynamically adjusts image information scene by scene. The result is better contrasts, brighter highlights, and richer blacks. Dolby Atmos (supported by GD2 & GX1) is a 3D sound format. Sounds can be precisely placed in the room (even from above), providing an extremely immersive sound experience.
